Two wood Competition - 15th August

22 players started at 10am, the top 8 went through to the quarter finals in the afternoon, while the rest took refuge in the shade, with cold drinks from the bar, to watch the quarters, semis and finals.
Thanks to everyone involved in making this an enjoyable day.
A one-day singles competition playing for the Geoff Bishop Trophy.
A singles match with only two woods isn't easy, but the ability to deliver two good woods is essential for a team's success in the rinks game, as Geoff, our late President, used to tell us.
That's why we've dedicated this annual event to him.

Semi-finalists, Damien vs Anne

Semi-finalists, Paul vs Dave
And the winner - Damien.
Triples Competition - 1st August
A one-day competition for teams of three playing for the Cyril Marchant Trophy.
After a hard morning of qualifying rounds, the losing teams settled down after lunch in the shade of the trees, enjoying a glass (or two) of sangria while watching the successful teams battling it out on the green.

The winners - Val, Mark and Dave

Runners-up - Phil, Mick and Jim
Hurstpierpoint Cup - 25th July
A special event in our calendar held in memory of Ben Bennett of Hurstpierpoint and Geoff Bishop, our President, who had been friends since their early childhood.
This year the trophy was won by Hurstpierpoint and presented to their Captain by our Captain , Val Barton.

Alec Grisbrook Competition - 4th July
Alec Grisbrook was a member of Saltdean Bowling Club for many years. He died in May 2009 after collapsing during a league match. This Australian pairs competition, Alec's favourite format, is played for a trophy donated by his family.
It's traditionally played in bright clothing, rather than club kit. This year the weather was perfect, the rinks played well and we all had a lovely day.
Thanks to Damien, our Competitions Secretary, for organising the day and to John and Mavis Jonas for providing Pimms and ice cream for the spectators of the semi- final and finals.
Semi-finals games were between Sheila & Anne, Steve & Helen and between Phil & Debbie, Paul & Dave

Sheila and Anne played Paul and Dave in the finals and after a very close match, 8 all after 8 ends, the extra end play off was won by Anne and Sheila.
Well played Paul and Dave, congratulations ladies.

Captain vs Vice Captain - Sunday 28th June
One of our regular fixtures each year is a very friendly game between teams playing for our Captain and Vice-captain.
This year 40 members played on a perfect afternoon for bowling. All the traditional elements of a "friendly" were there: a spider to start; tea, cakes and a raffle at half time; drinks after the match.
And a lot of lovely people.

Vice-captain's team
Captain's team
It was a close match - the winning team, by just 1 point, was...
The Vice-captain's.

Football Competition - 14th June
Ten teams (of three) competed for our Football Bowls Cup this year on a lovely afternoon, watched by an enthusiastic crowd.

And the winners were Grimsby
Phil, Julien and Helen
who beat
Hellenia Green Star
Richard, Steve and Phil
in a thrilling final and celebrated in style!

President's Day - 31st May
Our new president Maria Norris hosted this special day.
Members and guests were treated to a fun afternoon of bowls followed by a splendid tea.

Many thanks to Maria's daughters, and granddaughter, for taking care of all the catering.

Jack Hudson Trophy - 2nd May
28 members competed in our Yardstick Competition this year and scoring was high. Extra play was needed for a three person play-off, won by Jilly to secure a place in the semi-final.

We all relaxed to watch the semi-finals between Damien & Jilly, and Alan & Mike, it was a very close match between Alan and Mike.
Exciting for the spectators.

The final, between Alan and Damien was another close affair, won by Damien - well done!
The trophy and plaques were presented by our President, Maria.

And Damien christened the trophy in a time-honoured fashion!

Opening the Green - April 16th 2026
This year the green was opened by Peter Rush and the first bowls sent by Maria, our President and David, our Greenkeeper.

Then, wearing our new club kit, we all had a go!
